Mrs. Alonzo Olmstead Passes
Rebecca Welch Olmstead, widow of the late Alonzo Olmstead, passed away at her home in Litchfield Thursday evening, April 22, 1937. She was born in Jackson county, Indiana, June 22, 1847 and had nearly attained her 90th birthday. she was the daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. James Welch. She was married to Alonzo Olmstead, a verteran of the civil war, on September 12, 1869. To them were born 11 children. Eight are living, namely Mrs. Allie Matheney, Charles and Earl of Blackduck, Minn.; Mrs. Victor Akeson and William of Litchfield; James, Mrs. Dora Porter and Mrs. Victor Anderson of Darwin. A sister, Mrs. Mary Robisnon of Phoenix, Arizona, two brothers, Sam Welch of Seymour, Indiana and Isaac Welch of Stapels, Minn., are living, besides 29 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Claude Kain of Dassel is a nephew.
Mr. and Mrs. Olmstead became residents of Meeker county in 1879 and located in Litchfield in 1924. Mrs. Olmstead had been in failing health for some weeks before her death.
Funeral services were held at the home at 12:30 Sunday and from the Methodish church, of which she was a loyal supporter, at 1 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. Kettlewell.

Nov. 27 - A special to the Sentinel from Seymour, Ind. says "As the result of a terrible tragedy the end of a family feud, five people are dead in their country home, several miles east of this city. Four years ago Clinton Jordan, 21 years old married a daughter of Joshua Foster, with whom he has never lived happily. Last week they separated and she returned to the home of her father.
"Jordan met his father-in-law and accompanied him home, contrary to the wishes of the latter, who feared trouble. Jordon promised to behave, but soon after his arrial at Foster's home he bagan a quarrel. Foster then ordered him out of the house, when Jordan fired at the old man, but missed him, the ball striking Miss Cora Foster, aged 17, in the head, killing her instantly. His second shot hit Foster in the head and he fell, but he soon rose and ran about a half a mile to the home of another son-in-law, William Powell, where he fell and lingered until afternoon when he died.
"Jordon then turned his revolver toward Mrs. Foster, his mother-in-law, shooting her in the neck, the ball ranging downward and causing a wound from which she died. Jordan's wife attempted to defend her mother, and he stabbed her repeatedly in the breast, hands and face, and ended by shooting her through the head. Jordan then opened his vest, and, placing the revolver against his breast, sent a ball through his heart. He dropped dead, falling across the dead body of hiswife. The pistol was placed so close to his breast that Jordan's clothing took fire and was literally burned off of him, the skin dropping from his body when it was lifted.

The revolver was new, and was evidently bought with the premeditated purpose of killing his victims. The knife was also new and was freshly sharpened. The aged victim, Foster, was 60 years old, and his wife, 50 Mrs. Jordan was only 18 years old.

Foster, the aged victim, was 60 years old, and his wife 50. Mrs. Jordan was only 19 years old. Foster had an unsavory reputation, and when drinking, which he often did, he was ugly and quarrelsome. All the other victims were peaceful and orderly citizens.

Alonzo Olmstead Answers Final Call
Litchfields's last remaining veteran of he civil war of 1861-65 passed away last Thursday morning, March 2, 1933, at his home in this city at the age of 93 years 1 month and 24 days. Mr. Olmstead had gradually declined in health for a year or two, the last few months being confined to the house and bed. He was born in the state of Indiana January 8 1840. Shortly after the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted in the Indiana regiment and served four years. He and his family came to Meeker county about 1880, and he had lived here almost continuously since that time, a period of more than fifty years, residing on a farm near Darwin, a part of the time.
Mrs. Olmstead survives him, also four sons and four daughters. The sons are Charles and Earl Olmstead of Blackduck, Minn., James Olmstead of Darwin and W. A. Olmstead of Litchfield. The daughters are Mrs. E. H. Porter of Ellsworth, Mrs. Clifford Matheney of Blackduck, Mrs. Victor G. Anderson of Darwin and Mrs. V. A. Akesonof Litchfield.
The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from the home and M. E. church. As a mark of respect business places in this city were closed from 3 to 3:30 p.m. during the last rites. The funeral took on a military aspect, with escort of Sons of Veterans and world war soldiers with the usual firing squad salute at the grave. Rev. James Burns gave an impressive and appropriate sermon. Interment was in Lake Reipley cemetery.

Alonzo was born in Jackson County, IN of English-Irish parents. In 1861 he joined the Union Army and fought at the battles of Bull Run and Gettysburg. He also was with General Sherman in his famous March to the Sea. He saw President Lincoln and his son Robert, and used to be called upon to speak about this in later day celebrations of Lincoln's birthday. He returned from the war to his home where he worked as a stave maker until 1897 when he and his wife, Rebecca Welch, and four children made the long, tedious journey to Minnesota in a covered wagon.

CLIFFORD ALTON MATHENY
Litchfield and Darwin Relatives Attend the Funeral of Mr. Matheny at Blackduck
The funeral of Clifford A. Matheny of Blackduck was held Wednesday of last week from the Matheny farm home near that village, with Rev. Paul officiating, and burial followed in the Blackduck Cemetery.
Mr. Matheny died at his home on October 23. Born near Darwin, Meeker County, in 1872, he removed to Stearns County in 1883 with his parents and settled on a farm near Eden Lake. In 1897 he married Alzora Olmstead and in 1904 the family moved to Blackduck where he resided until his death. He is survived by his wife; four daughters; Mrs. Tom Lindsey of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Wm. Brownlee of Goodland, Mrs. Wm. Swarthout of California and Mrs. James Jensen of Blackduck, and five sons; Ronald, Kenneth, Bruce and Ralph of Blackduck and Keith of Fargo.
Several Litchfield and Darwin relatives attended the funeral.
Note: The Rev. Paul who officiated at the funeral of Clifford Alton Matheny was Andrew Jackson Paul, who would become Ralph Matheny's father-in-law.
